Prof. Kobia launches a Steering Committee for this year’s International Youth Day

A steering committee to spearhead the planning for the commemoration of this year’s International Youth Day (IYD) has been launched.

Youth day 2y Prof. Margaret Kobia presided over the event, during a press conference held at Harambee House on Thursday.




The Committee comprises of members from the Office of the President, the Deputy President, United Nations Habitat, National Assembly, National Youth Council, Youth Advisory Board, Youth Enterprise Development Fund, Council of Governors, Civil Society, Private Sector and Academia, including various universities.
This Committee, to be chaired by the Principal Secretary of the Ministry, Hon. Safina Kwekwe, is mandated to coordinate and oversee laid out activities on youth affairs that will lead to the commemoration of the celebrations to be marked on the 12th of August, 2018 in Kisii. It will also include other Ministries, the County Governments, the Civil Society and Private Sectors.
Some of the activities include:
A national citizen’s conversation on corruption in collaboration with the Building Bridges program Monday 6th August, 2018: and a peace caravan in Nairobi on Wednesday, 8th August, 2018, a global conversation on safe spaces and positing of Kenya youth agenda at the global platform, to be held at the UN Headquarters, Gigiri 10th August 2018, and the commemoration of IYD including educational forums and exhibitions to be held in Kisii County which will be graced by H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday 12th August 2018.
Prof. Kobia, further urged partners and stakeholders, including the County Governments, to organize activities within their localities bearing in mind this year’s theme ‘Safe Spaces to Celebrate the Youth’ starting from Tuesday 7th to Saturday 11th August, 2018.
She added that the activities should be aligned to the Big Four Agenda and youth inclusion and participation.
Prof. Kobia appealed to the youth to take an active role in the activities in order to voice their concerns, learn and participate in matters that affect them.
“We are also inviting the media to be part of this programme and play a part in youth empowerment. We appeal for your support in publicizing and educating the youth about the planned activities and programs,” Prof. Kobia stated.
In attendance were CEO National Youth Council, Mr Raymond Ochieng’ and the Secretary Youth Affairs in the Deputy President’s office, Mr Anthony Kibagendi among other National and County Governments youth leaders.
