Government disburses Ksh 140 million of Affirmative Funds to various women and youth groups

Embu, June 20, 2018

Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs, Prof. Margaret Kobia, concluded her three-days working visit in Tharaka-Nithi, Meru and Embu Counties where she disbursed financial aid to various groups.

The climax of the visit was disbursement of over Ksh140 million to benefit hundreds of women, youth and persons with disabilities to enable them scale or venture into income generating activities.

Disbursing over Ksh 40 million to various women and youth groups in Embu County at an event held at Kenya School of Government Embu campus grounds on Wednesday, Prof Kobia said the government has availed interest free and affordable affirmative funds through Women Enterprise Fund, Uwezo and Youth Enterprise Development Funds.

She pointed out that women and youth comprise over 70 per cent of the county’s population, but despite this significant numbers, they continue to face enormous and varied challenges in their pursuit for social economic empowerment.

Towards this end, CS Kobia stated that the Government under the leadership of President Uhuru Kenyatta, prioritized the empowerment of all citizens with particular focus on women and youth and initiated the funds being distributed to various beneficiaries across the country.

“This is in recognition of the role the two groups play in national development. Our youth are facing many challenges especially unemployment, lack of skills, idleness and drugs abuse. The Affirmative Funds are geared at helping them to develop alternative modes of occupation through enterprise and talent development,” she added.

CS Kobia, further stressed the importance of vocational training saying the government has allocated more funds towards its rehabilitation and offer training to vulnerable youth to gain employment relevant to the demands in market.

While addressing lectures and non teaching staff at the Kenya School of Government, Embu, CS Prof Kobia directed all agencies under her Ministry to heed the President’s call to establish tree nurseries and participate in planting trees so as reclaim the country ‘s forest cover to 10 per cent.

She also urged the institution to tailor their curriculum to align with the President’s Big Four Agenda, so as to produce human resource with skills needed to actualize the agenda thus and enable the country achieve Vision 2030.

Earlier, CS Kobia accompanied by the Embu County Woman Representative Hon. Jane Wanjiku, County Commissioner, Esther Maina and CEOs of the Affirmative Funds, paid a courtesy call to the Governor Martin Wambora,

During the meeting, CS Kobia urged leaders in the county to embrace unity of purpose forging cordial working relationship in order to ensure delivery of service to wananchi.
